Assistive Technology Resources for Special Education and Social Science course based on use in upcoming Unit Plan:

Technology for non-verbal communicative students
· Adobe Spark Video
Creating engaging videos for social media posts
· Autism Therapy with MITA
Students entering the food-based classroom will be students who require the most amount of extra planning on the teacher’s end and this can be a vey positive and enriching experience for both the student and the teacher, however the teacher needs to be open to collaborating with SERT.
· Bankaroo
In the event that there are students with high degree of needs for accommodation, there can be room made for the student to explore financial literacy as a part of their meal planning experience.
· Big Keys Keyboard
Useful application for students who are using iPad technology and not adept with use a regular keyboard in the iPad.
· Book Creator
An APP that students can use to publish their recipe books as well as other documents that they may want to publish as created in class based on their surveys and research data.
· BrainPOP
The Brainpop series videos offer teachers with resources that allow them to make the most of class time where students might be missing knowledge or struggling with textbook definitions/examples of academic terminology/jargon.
· Conversation Builder-Teen By: CommonSense Media
Conversation Builder is a good APP to help teenagers/adolescence navigate conversations, this may be helpful for those who demonstrate difficulty in verbal communication and/or need guidance for their interviews if their projects include this.
· Calendar App
This is a good APP to utilize the course calendar in order to allow students to be aware of what is important with regards to dates. This app will allow students to plan their project dates as well with regards to their self-directed cooking lab at the end of the course.
· Choiceworks
This is an exceptional tool that allows for students to complete daily routines, in some cases this is great for special education students, in other cases this is a great tool for developing routine in lab situations
· Clicker Docs
Being an “open” class, clicker docs is a great app for assisting in typing skills of all levels.
· Continuous Glucose Monitor (Medically applicable)
This is more of an interest bit for students who might be looking at this field of study as they move through their academic career. In other applications, this is important to ensure that students who are diabetic have the ability to foresee any issues.
· Quillbot AI
This is an AI that can assist in providing students basic feedback on grammar and spelling while also helping students paraphrase work.
· CP Pen Reader Pen
An assistive tool for students who struggle with reading recipes or other class readings
· DD’s Dictionary (The Dyslexic Dictionary)
Excellent dictionary APP to help students who may be dyslexic
· Dragon Naturally Speaking
Text to speech software that is great for students who are cooking and want to make notes or document their work while not touching their cellphone.
· Easy Spelling Aid
This is a useful tool to request students to use before submitting recipe work or journals.
· Educreations
This is a whiteboard and general online classroom technology, but rather than “online” the teacher can prepare whiteboards for the class and pull them up on a projector (if need be) and have the instructions read to present for the class.
· Electronic Video Magnifier
If students are accessing videos on their own devices, this APP may be beneficial for getting a better look at cooking videos created by the teacher or made available by the teacher
· Interactive Whiteboard: Smartboard
Much like Educreations, this is a whiteboard APP more commonly used in classrooms.
· Kahoot
This is an online quiz database that is exceptional for the teacher to include in the information and details of the course content through the app which students can access all together in class or independently.
· Microsoft Speech Recognition
Like Dragon Talk, the microsoft speech recognition functions as a form of control over the computer without actually touching computer.
· Quizlet
Another trivia based learning tool that allows the teacher or creator (in general) to create quizzes that classmates/students can complete to learn key concepts or relevant vocabulary.
· Quizzizz
Another trivia based learning program that mixes the ideas of kahoot and Quizlet, this is basically a self-assessed quiz based programming that allows for the teacher have student check-in through the quiz and demonstrate what they may or may not understand.
· Read Write Think
There are a lot of good minds-on articles and class topics that can be brought in to the classroom/lessons that come with reading comprehension quizzes as well as reading assistive resources
· ZoomText Magnifier/Reader
This may be useful for texts and resources that may be older or come from scanned sources.
