Cleaning-Up Your Digital Footprint: For Students and Teachers

Everyone is or was young once. Everyone at some did something embarrassing that ended up on a friend's cellphone or the internet, as much as we don't want to think about ot may even enjoy having that available to look back at and laugh at, it really shouldn't be there.

Today, "Digital Footprint" is the topic of the tutorial and about this topic, we are going to discuss or look at how to eliminate the unwanted pieces as well as clean-up the risk-of leaking sort of information from the internet (as best as we can at least).

First thing is first, go through ANY "old" or "current" social media accounts, forum accounts, ALL OF IT and eliminate anything that may paint you in a negative light. May be even delete a few of the accounts you no longer use anymore. The best thing that could happen, the websites you used to participate in, were bought up by new websites or dissolved over time.

Secondly, after starting the purge process of "old" you, begin the search for any lingering pictures, videos or other information and track where it is stored. How to do this:

1) Enter any web browser;

2) Enter Bing, Baidu, Ask Jeeves and Google

3) Type your search term and look for anything that pops-up which paints your name in a negative light

4) Type your name, nickname, emails, anything that is related or linked to you or your social media accounts and ensure that there is no buried "dirt" by clicking ahead to the last search page link available

5) Check "Youtube", "Youku", and "Bilibili" as well with steps 3 and 4

NOTE: If you have lingering information on websites or in the hands of others, you may need to put in requests to have it removed, in some cases, press charges (yes, that is a thing).

How "Click-Bait" Could Ruin Your Career!

When surfing the net, its no secret that there are people watching, listening and recording every single thing you do. The best way to combat this is with a VPN, I personally use "Nord VPN" (VPN=Virtual Private Network).

Essentially VPN's will shadow your IP address and stop harmful marketing schemes from tracking your movement and actions online.

As a teacher, most professionals are aware of how "click-bait" can unexpectedly take over your browsers and pop-up on your desktop at times as well. Even though you may know and understand that these ads for stories/products do not reflect your online presence (or may want to believe they don't) the fact is, an awkward PPT or video showing in class could have profoundly negative impacts on how your class views your level of professionalism and overall online presence.

Doesn't happen often (maybe), or it happens so often that people quickly dismiss it. To avoid it, follow som of the tips I have provided for you below.

1. When presenting in class, NEVER duplicate your screen to a projector or second monitor, keep it set-up as "an additional screen" this is always smart as it acts as a filter for you to move stuff over as needed and without worry of nasty Ads "popping-up" every so often

2. Keep your Pop-Up blocker live ALL THE TIME, even when asked to turn it off, you can do so, but remember, that you are being tracked through what you are looking at on that site

3. VPN's are excellent but can sometimes be expensive or an unnecessary cost  (Nord is cheapest and certainly effective)

4. Use "incognito" windows when available, this actually sometimes helps you save money on flights when booking as well.

Student Hack: How to Make Writing less and Productivity MORE

This is extremely simple, go onto your cellular device, or tablet and turn on a messaging service. Most messaging services such as the "message" App that is factory installed on iOS devices, is a prime example.

The App usually (if using "Message", it will), have a voice to text button, usually with the icon of a microphone, as you press it an speak, it will record your voice and words will appear as you as them. For "period", the speaker should say "Period" or "Full Stop". Otherwise, take two breaths and continue speaking. Commas will need to be added in afterwards.

Generally speaking, after the message is typed from your voice, you can copy and paste it to a text field such as "email" or notepad. Insert the text or use the text as needed.

Using GIMP 2-don't

Basic needs for editing as a novice with advanced software.

Blending Photos together:

Simply said, without the time to really study this at the moment, its a pain in the rear-end unless I teach myself how to use (don't have time for this obviously), so doing the smart thing and sticking with what I know and what works easier.

Mix of Adobe's free iOS software "Adobe Mix"* (might be different name) and "Adobe Illustrator". They use the creative cloud and can pass projects between devices from the cloud with ease.

These are only available on American, Oceanic, European and Canadian APP stores-not Chinese APP store.

Class lesson plans to come and be put up on TPT (teachers pay teachers within the year)
