Teacher Leadership Pt.1: Presentation Assignment

This is where the work makes you feel a little over confident as a CT-but in the words of colleagues who have moved up the line/ranks, its a necessary step, to develop over confidence in yourself is the raw confidence that you hope others see in you as a leader, eventually it shapes into a sense of modesty that comes along with the innate confidence instilled in your staff after years of proving yourself a reasonable and willing leader. Reasonable enough to deal with professionally and willing enough to hear your staff/students and parents.

I have been trying to develop this voice in myself for a couple years now and I begin to see it taking shape, but I'm still very much someone who doesn't feel I deserve some of the credit that is given to me sometimes-however our society is strongly built around this idea of "leadership", team leadership is difficult to instil so as long as there is "a" position and not a "departmental say".

I don't know if I explained myself well enough there, but in less words-if we are paying someone to be a leader, credit will continue to circulate as something of monetary value/worth, until its very much a volunteered position, I personally find it difficult to receive the extra credit-sure its earned, but I don't know-I feel its MORE than what I am entitled to-which humbles me greatly.

Without further wait, as per the course (30%),

"Create a presentation on any format, such as Prezi, Smore, Haiku Deck etc. to support new and experienced teachers to understand what teacher leadership can look like, sound like and feel like in the school environment. You may choose to share a story or create a scenario where you can pinpoint important aspects of leadership from the course modules.

Remember at times, teachers do many things in schools that are considered leadership. How can you effectively make them more aware and understand their leadership abilities and roles?"

Instructor Feedback:

"Carmelo, I appreciated your expertise and understanding of what leadership is. You were able to depict the important role and need for leadership. There are many aspects that have been noted that are important such as the skills, attributes, and abilities that you feel an individual should strive to cultivate to become a strong teacher leader. You have certainly understood and showcased that a strong school leader is able to support others. This requires the leader to trust others with responsibilities rather than micro-managing everything or second-guessing the decisions made by other members of the school. You have consolidated your knowledge and understanding from the modules and have put together a piece that is really supportive and shares the value aspects of leadership!

Great leaders are passionate and deeply committed to the work that they do. They are lifelong learners who instill energy and excitement in their staff and show sincere enthusiasm in their work. They are committed to helping every one! Their passion and dedication inspires and motivates those around them to work harder to achieve common goals to best meet the needs of the student in their care.

Remember what makes the best teacher and leader is the one who is continually striving to get better. It is critical for a strong teacher leader to be always learning, adapting, and improving themselves so that they are well prepared to take control of the dynamic chaos that is a school, and also lead/inspire others into better practices as well.

Growth comes from risk, challenge and change. A strong teacher leader has the ability to push him/herself and others in order to become better individuals, team members and leaders.

Keep thinking about empathy and the various leadership styles."
