I have attached a document that resonates with me in regards to a service that I conducted with my students very early on in my career. I used to worked in Jinshitan, this place had a beach wherein it was quite close to the school. In the summer/late summer months the spring would attract a great deal of tourists. In the course, we discussed themes of nature and care for the environment through a novel study, "The Beach" by Alex Garland.

In many instances I was able to benefit from the situation in regards to experience wherein I was fortunate enough to bring students to the beach to participate in clean-up, and of course, ice-cream. It was an enjoyable experience that all students were happy to participate in.

(ii) Compare how the IB defines Service Learning with the videos and quotes above. How would you like to see it defined? What challenges can you see that would make it difficult to implement service learning in your classes? Please respond to the above prompts in 100-175 words. Post one brief reply to another participant.

When discussing service learning, I would imagine it sounds like the following, "activities that are directly built with a call to action on the behalf of those engaged within the proposed service learning"; to a degree service learning is difficult to implement in situations where the school has deliberate red tape due to low budgeting; impoverished communities and in situations where the service may have inherent dangers involved. That being said, fundraising and/or sponsorship are ways to overcome these issues. When looking at the safety of the situation one could deduce that the inclusion of a trained professional in the field to be brought in as a guide or mentor to the situation/stakeholders, may be another way to solve the problem of inherent dangers.
